General Overview

Steeped in history and replete with natural beauty, Anne Arundel County is the most centrally-located county in the state of Maryland, and considered by many to be the heart of the state. Founded in 1649, the county’s first European settlement was nestled on the north shore of the Severn River, opposite present-day Annapolis, which soon became the economic, social, and political center of the colony. Today, Annapolis stands as the site of the capital of Maryland, but it’s far from Anne Arundel’s only gem. From Severna Park, to Arnold, Millersville, Pasadena, and beyond, the entire county is renowned for its access to the Chesapeake Bay, picturesque vantages, and vibrant, water-driven lifestyle.

Residents and visitors alike flock to downtown Annapolis to experience its quintessential colonial, small-town feel punctuated by 18th-century brick architecture and waterfront views. Home to the Naval Academy and Maryland State House as well as a host of dynamic nightlife, dining, and shopping diversions, Annapolis is both a summertime attraction and a storied year-round destination in its own right.

Five miles up the road sits Arnold, a neighboring suburb that features an impressive variety of scenic riversides, cliffs, and beaches that form the ideal backdrop for everything from sightseeing to leisure activity. Known for its 12 expansive marinas and the reputable Bay Hills Golf Club, Arnold is the ultimate sanctuary for boaters and golfers alike. And to the east, you’ll find Sandy Point State Park, where beachgoers descend in droves to swim and play during the spring and summer months. The park is also home to a diverse array of marshes and creeks where local wildlife runs (and swims) free.

The Baltimore-Annapolis Bike Trail connects Arnold to Severna Park, a community-oriented suburb situated between the Severn and Magothy Rivers, and built around its lively, 200 mile shoreline. Here, residents take part in a sweeping range of nautically-focused activities—from boating, to fishing, crabbing, and more. Severna Park is also within minutes of beloved Kinder Farm Park, as well as plenty of upscale shopping and dining destinations suited for every style and taste.
